REVIEW: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Headmix

Saturday 1 June, The Bell

A shout-out for those who were there when the then Headmix Collective played on Walcot Street 25 years ago was acknowledged, perhaps a bit sheepishly, by a good dozen or two of the crowd, but this wasn’t one of those petrified punk band shows where the sexagenarians are dressing sixteen and no longer sexy: the audience were a normal Bell age range, including under-25s, plus the odd few who had wondered in off the street not expecting a band and stayed.

Perhaps it’s because folk instruments never were in fashion for long, so can’t really go out; perhaps the reggae stylee bassline is a perennial (sure seems like it), and yes a number of newer rhythms may have hit the floor tonight too, but the band really didn’t sound dated to me - tho’ I am of the 25 years cohort so maybe I can’t tell. The other thing that hasn’t changed is the attitude. The double-female-fronted Headmix always were a message band, they encored with a repeat of their refugee welcome (a new song) ‘Beyond Borders’ and a call to remember to vote the Government out: perhaps it hasn’t changed because it’s still needed the way it is…
