Samantha Houston chats to the fringe about how she got started in the 'biz, why you need to come see her fringe show!
How would you describe your ‘Origin Story’ – how did you get started ‘in the business’ and what is it about performing that keeps you going?
So, the three of us - Bridget Hardy, Penny Rossano and I - have known each other in and out of the opera and classical singing world for 20+ years - mostly huddled together upstage in an ill-fitting costume! We felt that the time had come to share our experiences with both those in the know and those who have no clue what being backstage is like … and here we are!
And what is it about performing that keeps you going? Well, as one of us says in the show: “none of us can let it go, can we?”
Tell us a little bit about your Bath Fringe 2024 Show
Destination: ‘Old Hag’ is the tale of life backstage before going on stage. Told by witches. With music. The three ‘Ladies of the Chorus’ are getting ready in the broom cupboard for opening night of a small-scale adaptation of Verdi’s Macbetto, and from the ‘half call’ to the ‘beginners’ call’, with a smattering of opera singing, the women consider life’s big question: have we actually made it? And, if this is it - is that ok?
What is it about Fringe Theatre that excites you?
Being part of a renowned fringe festival with a new play, with so many other wonderful performers, is just the best place for us to hold our premiere! We’re very excited!
What is your favourite thing to do in Bath when you’re not performing?
Just walking around and stopping wherever takes your fancy for a cup of tea! It’s a lovely place to wonder. Oh, and the Therme Spa is a real treat.
What advice would you give to people just starting out?
Everyone’s journey is slightly different - some will come out of the starting blocks with a burst, others will take their time tying their laces. I’ve found that finding like-minded souls has been helpful - we all succeed when we support each other. And, be brave - if you don’t try, you’ll never know.
In an alternate universe, what career path might you have followed?
Either a pastry chef or an interior designer. It’s never too late to start these careers, so watch out for my amazingly designed cake shop!
If you were a Bath landmark, what would you be and why?
I’d be Bath Abbey - standing proud, producing beautiful music. Or I’d be a Bath Bun from Sally Lunn’s 🙂
Destination: 'Old Hag' is on at the Mission Theatre on Sunday 9th June. Book Tickets.
