Helen Prior tells us about her show, Sex, Art and the Art of Survival - coming to Burdall's Yard on the 7th June.
How would you describe your ‘Origin Story’ – how did you get started ‘in the business’ and what is it about performing that keeps you going?
I am a cancer survivor but I managed to turn my life around for the better, going from a victim to a victorious survivor. So, I am on a mission to tell people that diagnosis is not a sentence, not the end. But, it is you who have to fight the battle. Not necessarily with cancer, but with any difficulties life throws at you.
Tell us a little bit about your Bath Fringe 2023 Show
My show is about resurrection, and a little bit about ‘erection‘: when you stand on the border between life and death, you start to appreciate all aspects of life, and sex is part of it.
I am a former art historian turned comedian, and my show is a unique fusion of art and laughter: I use forty art masterpieces to reflect on a hilarious story of life. There's no dark material, just laughter, education, and inspiration.
What is your favourite thing to do in Bath when you’re not performing?
I love Bath! Visiting the city always lifts my spirits but, as an historian, I especially love the Holburne Museum.
What advice would you give to people just starting out?
Keep laughing - it extends your life. One of my favourite things about being a comedian is that you can say things through comedy that would otherwise would be impossible.
In an alternate universe, what career path might you have followed?
I love writing, and my book Adventures of an Old CxNT - Thrill of Life After Cancer was published recently, but I would like to find more time for writing.
If you were a Bath landmark, what would you be and why?
I would love to be Bath Abbey, because the building exists to helps people in their lives... That what I want to do, and what my show aims to do!
Sex, Art and the Art of Survival is on at Burdall's Yard on Wednesday 7th June. Book Tickets.
